Did you know I was gone?

September 28, 2005 by Rosa Say

There was just too much good stuff here keeping you occupied!

Mahalo nui loa (thank you very much) to all the wonderful Guest Authors of our Ho‘ohana Community who have been sharing their thoughts on lifelong learning this month.  I’m fresh off another inter-island hop, so a bit travel weary right now, and I must get some sleep in, but after a much needed head-clearing morning run I’ll be back to post a recap on our September Ho‘ohana on Lifelong Learning. Our community forums are getting better and better, aren’t they?

However I couldn’t let any more time slip by me without saying mahalo to Dick Richards and Dwayne Melancon for the very generous reviews they’ve written for Managing with Aloha on Come Gather Round and on Genuine Curiosity. You’ve had me walking on cloud nine these past two days! I may write other books, but there will never be another Managing with Aloha for me, and to know that it makes the smallest bit of difference to people I admire so much is very humbling, and enormously rewarding. Mahalo (thank you) Dick and Dwayne, and also Dave and Ray for your comments there.

At Come Gather Round: On Managing with Aloha
At Genuine Curiosity: Not what or how – but why?

It’s quite late Wednesday night as I write this. If Thursday has dawned for you by the time you are reading this, do click in to Leon’s Lifehack.org for the fourth Thursday column I’ve contributed there: it’s called On Ho‘ohiki: Keeping Promises.

More from me here later in the day. If I owe you an email response on anything, mahalo for your patience and understanding; I’ll be answering you soon. It’s good to be home.

Saying “thank you” cannot wait

August 17, 2005 by Rosa Say

A slight break in our interview action today because I must say THANK YOU! to all of you. I have a double dose of good news to share, and I know Tom understands that I’ll burst if I can’t tell you as soon as possible.

Managing_with_aloha_5While this is may be a blimp on the radar screen for those A-List authors, for me it is HUGE: Managing with Aloha goes into its second print run today! As a first-time author I have nothing to compare it to, but I am told by my distributors and booksellers that for this to happen in less than a year (we’re 2 days short of the 9-month mark) for a hard-cover book produced in Hawaii is “way better than great Rosa!” especially in light of our very ambitious first-run printing. “And a business book no less!” …(not sure what that means.)

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that all of you reading in our Ho‘ohana Community have made this happen for me, and I am filled with mahalo for the way you have supported me, and much more importantly, joined the groundswell of the managing with aloha message. We can reinvent the workplace.

The second bit of news is that Talking Story has made the Top500 List in Feedster this month, with a debut at # 479. I have to admit to all of you that I’m a bit perplexed by it, and I keep wondering how the thing works, for there are sooooooo many other blogs I expect to be on that list instead of this one. However I am grabbing that good news too because it’s not just about me; we share it.

In my mind there is no Talking Story without our Ho‘ohana Community. You challenge me, you inspire me, you make sure that my energy and commitment to Talking Story never ever falters. For in fact, it gets stronger and more consistent every day. Shine in your light, for this recognition belongs to all of us!

Mahalo nui loa; thank you very very much.

Rosa

“Aloha! What’s in a name?” Quite a bit.

July 9, 2005 by Rosa Say

Yes, quite a bit.

You may think I’m crazy to post this, and maybe I am ” however I’ve got to be honest and say that I’m pretty thrilled with Matthew De George’s posts at his ManageWithoutThem Blog about the misunderstanding and potentially fuzzy interpretations people can levy against my book, Managing with Aloha.

MWA has been out for about eight months, and up to now everyone has always been so terribly nice about it — which is a great thing, and believe me, I’m not at all complaining about that. It’s just that Matthew has actually been the first one to truly engage me in a discussion about it. I’m loving it.

Matthew’s first post was here: Change This — Managing with Aloha
And this was Matthew’s post a few days ago:
Aloha! What’s in a name?
[I just saw it now Matthew, sorry for the delay with my response.]

Matthew has been great, and he is right: First impressions count for a lot; no author can blindly hope that people will wait to read your entire book before they have an opinion about it.  Takes me back to one of Stephen Covey’s habits again ” Seek first to understand, and then be understood”

Once I decided to distribute my book outside of Hawaii, seeking to understand what aloha is perceived to be in the rest of the world became pretty fascinating for me. Thus one reason I wanted to write the ChangeThis manifesto: I’m asking a lot expecting people to buy MWA for $24.99 when at full retail, then expecting they’ll read every bit of it — all 266 pages worth.

Now a completely free 28-page manifesto could have a better shot. Perhaps another blind hope, but maybe one with more of a fighting chance. And I fully realize a persons’s time is more precious than what may be in their wallet: edit after edit, I tried to keep it as short as I could.

So Ho‘ohana Community, would you help me out? I would sincerely appreciate anything you could do to help me spread the word about the free download of my MWA manifesto on ChangeThis. Or welcome your friends to visit all of us here on Talking Story and join our conversation: It’ll be a one-stop shop for them; the link to Change This is in the right column, up top beneath the MWA book jacket.

Tell you what, one more offer: two more freebies.

Managing with Aloha: Yes! You can too!

This was the title I decided to give to the manifesto I wrote for www.ChangeThis.com because no matter where you live and work, if you are a manager I believe that Managing with Aloha is for you. That is my mana‘o, my very deeply held belief and conviction; it is a belief I am very passionate about. More on this is posted here.

My sincere mahalo to the generous bloggers who have helped me share the announcement about Managing with Aloha’s arrival at ChangeThis.com: I realize how precious your time and blog real-estate is, and I truly do appreciate your very kind posts!
